Good afternoon fight fans,

I wasn't sure what the general feeling was about tonight's UFC 101 event..Since we had a Shed Fight night a few weeks ago, I figured that this even, while a spectacular card, came a bit too soon to open up the shed doors again.

I'm always up for a last minute highway run, so let me know...If not, your friendly correspondent will be streaming the event through ufc.com then running the feed through the TV...just an insider secret...if you buy the web stream via ufc.com (not the yahoo feed), you also get to watch the un-aired under card fights for free plus you get a bonus, ring card girl cam throughout the event.....although you have to wait until the next morning to watch the un-aired fights. As for the ring card girls, tonight's event marks the debut of the maxim's UFC ring card girl contest winner Natasha (picture above) ....

As for the fights....BJ Penn vs Fenflo? and Anderson "the spider" Silva vs. Forest Griffin at 205lbs? Holy smokes...what a night...

BJ Penn Vs KenFlo: tough one here...two of my favorite fighters to watch...BJ has the edge in power and boxing and is the BJJ master but Kenflo is no BJJ slouch ...Kenflo has crazy Mui Tai Kicks and is a cardio freak...

No one taps, I can tell you that.. and normally my prediction would be that BJ would gas in the third round and Kenflo would win a decision....BUT...the word is that BJ is finally IN-SHAPE...he looked like it at today's weigh in....I guess he spent 2 months training with Mark Marenovich's father this time and an in-shape BJ Penn is too much for anyone in the world at 155, even KenFlo...

from there he'll do a lot of damage and the fight will be stopped... this is BJ's signature, unstoppable move, whenever he is the stronger fighter and is in-shape..

Forest vs the spider?

If forest is able to frustrate Silva with take downs and clinches, he may be able to survive a few rounds...but more likely...with Forests aggressive style and glass-Joe chin...this one could get ugly...the spider has something to prove after a few back-to-back lackluster performances...so he will be in full smash mode...I doubt this goes past a few minutes into the first round....forest will be eating punches and then will certainly go "night-night" via knees whilst in the inescapable Silva Mui Tai clinch...

Sorry to hear about your injured ball, Kevin! I was half asleep at the fights the other night when I heard you had injured one! As most of the guys know, if anyone can relate and sympathize with you having an injured ball, I can! It's difficult to get comfortable and hard when you can't see straight, which definately affects your goals! I hope your ball heals quickly, there are no lingering problems, and you can see straight again! I know how embarassing it can be to have so many people look at your ball and poke and prod at it. It can be very uncomfortable, but, take the pain meds if you need them! It's actually kind of exciting with the pain numbed, kind of like scratching a good itch! I don't know how much good the goggles below will help, but, I'm sure Jason had his reasons. I would recommend a cup, myself. But, only after the swelling goes down!

Anyways, get well soon! Hope you'll be able to drive and walk straight soon and make it for the pre-season!

UFC 100 IN THE SHED..... OH YEAH! THERE WAS SOME TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES AT THE START, BUT THE NIGHT IN ALL WAS A GREAT SUCCESS. The New England Patriots have struck a deal with veteran free agent inside linebacker Paris Lenon, according to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe.

Per the report, the transaction likely takes the Patriots out of the running for former St. Louis Rams starting linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa. Tinoisamoa has visited the Patriots, Chicago Bears and the Buffalo Bills.

“Paris is excited to finally be a part of a winning organization and eager to contribute in whatever way Coach [Bill] Belichick and his staff see fit,” agent Jon Persch told the Globe. “Now, quite simply he’s eager to go to work.”

Lenon, 31, recorded a career-high 121 tackles last season for the Detroit Lions, leading the 0-16 team in tackles.

He has a previous stint with the Green Bay Packers.

The Patriots were in need of some proven experience at inside linebacker after third-round pick Tyrone McKenzie suffered a season-ending knee injury at a rookie minicamp.

Shed Fight Night Update- Schedule

Hello fight night fans..It's been I while since my last post, as the world of MMA has been a bit silent for a few weeks...but we've got some exciting fights coming up this month as well as a possible Shed Fight Night Event.

A few news items to report:

- Charles "Mask" Lewis, the founder of TapouT, and one of the most recognizable faces of MAA, died in a car crash a few weeks ago.




- The Tim "The Main-iac" Silvia (former UFC heavyweight Champ and former Main Resident ) vs. Ray Mercer MMA fight, was switched to a boxing match and then cancelled as the Nevada State Athletic Commission would not sanction the event....

- The BJ Penn/GSP Greasing saga continues as BJ's team formally submits an 18 page protest of the fight to the commission and several of GSP's past opponents report that he was "unnaturally slippery" when they fought as well (insert joke)...but then again, GSP did kick all their A$$'s, so take those comments with a grain of salt (or Peppers)


Upcoming Events:
Wednesday Arpil 1 UFC Fight Night...FREE event on Spike TV..

Only a few marketable names on this card, the headliner is the Carlos Condit/Martin Campman Fight...Condit, who held the WEC title until they eliminated the weight class, jumps into the deep end of the pool to test his skills against a dangerous kickboxer in Kampman...but Condit should win this fight as he is a beast...

Also on the card is A Shed Correspondent Favorite, and local guy, Jorge (hor-hey) Rivera...His fights are always exciting, great standup fighter.


UFC 97 Saturday April 18 Shed Fight Night?

The headliner on this card is Anderson "The Spider" Silva vs Thales Leites ...now, as we know Anderson Silva is arguably the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.... some folks have Fedor as #1..but it's close...we may actually find out..as I've head rumblings of proposed super fights between the top three fighters in the world have been swirling (Silva vs GSP and Silva vs. Fedor)...the GSP/Silva fight is a lot more realistic as they are both under contract with the UFC, they only fight 15 pounds away from one another and a catch weight fight at 180 is workable...but Silva would be at a big disadvantage if he fought Fedor who fights at about 235...though I think Silva would still win... Silva also said this week, that he wants to fight Roy Jones in a Boxing match...!

Anyway..Thales Leitis has absolutely no shot to beat Anderson Silva...no matter how much they want to pump up Leitis to sell tickets..

I haven't even told you the best part about this card...The return of Shed Favorite Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell...after a tough 2008, The iceman starts his road back to the the title when he faces off against mauricio "shogun" Rua. Shogun is top 5 in the world at 205, but he has been unimpressive since joining the UFC and I think the Iceman is going to put him to sleep within the first minute.

Pat's Opener: 9/14 Monday NIGHT Game vs. Buffalo!!

That's right Pat's fans! Summer is almost over! The Red Sox are undefeated in the regular season, and it's almost time for the Pat's Opener! The Commisioner is supposed to announce today that the 50th Anniversary of the AFL and 40th Anniversary of Monday Night Football will be celebrated with the return of Tom Brady and a duel between arguably two of the best wide receivers in the game today: T.O. and Randy Moss. Of course, we all know who will win the game and the wide reveiver battle! But, we'll let them play to prove it! So, relax and enjoy what's left of the summer, because it's going to be a fast and furious start to the much anticipated opener!

Shed Fight Night Recap UFC 96

Even though your friendly fight night correspondent was unable to make the event, a nice crowd gathered on Saturday to watch UFC 96..

As promised by yours truly, we saw a nice group of exciting fights with the exception of a few duds. Here are some of the highlights:

Quinton Jackson Defeated Keith Jardine: Unanimous Decision

In a pretty good back and forth fight, Rampage grabs victory from the jaws of an either/way decision with a left hook with 10 seconds remaining, sending Jardine to the mat.

No real fireworks in this one, but both guys came to fight. The highlight of this fight may have been the pre-fight stare down..and then the trash talking between Rampage and Keith Jardine's best Friend and Light Heavyweight belt holder Rashad Evans.... These two are set to square off in May for the title. That is if Rampage accepts the fight on short notice. With Frank Mir's knee injury, the Brock Lestnar/Mir fight was pushed to July (UFC 100) and They need to push up Rashad's title defence to the May Show. Pencil in May and July for great shed fight nights...UFC 100 is set to be the biggest card of all time ( Let's not buy into this just yet ) ...with both the the heavyweight title and the welterweight title on the line ..G(rease)SP vs. Tiago "Pitbull" Alves also


Gabriel Gonzaga Knock out cold by Shane Carwin Shane Carwin

The Hype rolls on with Shane Carwin (the only fighter in the world who wears bigger gloves that Brock Lestner...4XL) getting rocked early, then dropping Gonzaga with a short right hand. Carwin actually works a full time job as an mechanical engineer and only trains part time, so the sky is the limit as he makes fighting his full time Career. This dude has to cut about 20 lbs to make the 265 heavyweight limit and may have the second best one-punch knock out power in the world... I'd still take Fedor any day.. Can't wait to see Lestner/Carwin...that is if Lestner can get by Mir...who looked unstoppable against Nogera a few months ago..


Matt Hamill Destroys Mark Munoz with a vicious head kick

This was, in my opinion, the fight of the night...with shed favorite Matt "the hammer" Hamill dominating Mark Munoz from the opening bell until he landed a crazy head kick that crumpled the former NCAA D1 Champ..

Good to see the Hammer continue to improve his game...he even out wrestled Munoz...but on the down side... Hamill still fights like the terminator...walking straight at his opponent with his hands down, chin up, and reaching for all his shots...the guys at the top of the 205 division will eat him up until he adds some D to his game. I would have thought that The Rich Franklin fight would have showed hamill that he needs to change it up a bit...but I didn't see anything different from him...well except for that crushing, lead-pipe shin to Munoz's Face! Hope that guy is ok..looked like Rogen and Goldberg were dancing the 2 step to distract us from the fact that they had a stretcher and EMTs called in.


The dud(s) of the night
1) The number one dud of the night was the Brandon Vera Mike Patt fight. As predicted, this was a gimme fight for Vera...who really needed a win to justify his spot in the UFC. They paid him a lot of money and he hasn't looked good at all since dropping from heavyweight. This was clearly a fight that was put together so Goldberg could ramble on about Vera's Mui Tai skills and the fact that he is now a dedicated fighter and "back"... I'm not buying what they're selling here. Patt looked 35 lbs overweight and out of his league...it felt like the intercontinental championship was on the line and Tito Santana was gonna run out from the dressing room at any moment. I was huge Vera Fan when he was fighting at heavyweight...although he can make the cut to 205, his skills seem to translate better at heavy...preying on bigger, slower guys.. The jury is still out on Vera butd I don't think they can just keep feeding him Mike Pratts for long before everyone else notices.


2) The Refs: Normally I think the refs do a pretty goob job in the UFC...but as the volume of shows increases, we see more new, inexperienced faces wearing the obligatory black polo and rubber gloves. A non televised fight with Shane Nelson was stopped way to early and the Matt Brown / Pete Sell fight was halted at one point when Sell was in deep trouble, then the ref let the action continue when he saw Sell was ok to continue? What the F? There are no standing eight counts in MMA...then the ref let the fight go on so long that Matt Brown felt bad having to smash Sell in the face any more.....Bring Back Big John McCarthy!! Let him clean this mess up.


3) Gray Maynard Vs. Jim Miller: I was somewhat proven wrong with this one with Gray Keeping the fight standing mostly, but he still fought for the W...not to finish...he had many opportunities to finish this fight, but instead opted to step out, circle, check the clock, throw a jab, step out, circle, check the clock... Gray could win 100 fights in a row, but won't make a main card until he's willing to risk it all and throw down.

Caribean Night

I haven't been this conflicted since The Fonz battled Mork From Ork in one of the most dramatic TV crossover episodes of all time.

I guess it's a tale as old as time itself...Shed or the wife...shed or the wife...hmm.. Is it possible to have it all? Caribbean night goes until 11:30pm... but the is a possibility that I may pull a Willis Reed and come limping up the shed stairs after the under card..

Well, I mean other than football, but, well, could there? The King of the 8 sided Ring will be at the Shed 26 Sports Complex on Saturday night to watch the complexity of Darwinism in all it's glory! Vrable-Gate?

The following has been edited down a few times to comply with a request to shorten my posts. It is a day to day struggle coping with the affliction of Finger Diarrhea (great band name).

Seems like the Pats gave up a lot for the 34th pick. I think the Dolphins got the same kind of a pick when they traded for the one-legged Culpepper from the Vikings in 06. Although the Pats clear a nice chunk of cap room in the deal, the lion's share of it (14.5m) was created just so they they could make this kind of a trade in the first place. Also think that there must be something else behind the Vrable trade...please be warned...stupid conspiracy theory to follow: Maybe Bill just gave Pioli a sweet deal to keep him happy/quiet as he knows a bit too much about Bill's skeletons...

Many apologies to the Shed management, staff and membership in general, on my tardiness, but we've got a lot happening in the world of MMA....so let's get to it.

First off, Frank no need to fret, as last weeks UFC Fight Night Card was relatively underwhelming, a low turn-out was expected and the Shed President called off the event. Apparently to watch "The Wrestler" with the Misses.

But let's recap last week's Fight Night...As expected, the night was fairly uneventfully with the exception of the Josh Koshcheck fight... Kos was KO'd by UFC newcomer, and BJJ (that's Brazilian JuJitsu, Frank please get your mind out of the gutter) expert Paulo Tiago...

Koscheck is one of the most love/hated fighters in the UFC...as many people (including yours truly) were put off by his lay and pray, clock watching...just get a "W" style when he first broke into the sport.

Since then he has begun seriously training on his feet..an has recently fancied himself a kick boxer. From last week's performance it looks like he may want to get back to his roots; vicious take downs and face smashing ground and pound. This fight was pretty much a fluke though, Kos underestimated Tiago and as the imortal Joe Rogan says "everyone has a button, located behind your jawbone, it's just a matter of time until someone finds it"... I don't know why, but for the first time I'm a Koscheck fan, I want to see how he rebounds...

The headliner was a snooze-fest, with Diego Sanchez beating Joe Daddy in what turned out to be a low impact Kick boxing match. I agree with you Drew that Joe Daddy looked a bit one dimensional, but that was mostly Diego's defense and supperior boxing tequnique. Diego trained with Oscar De la Hoya for a while and looked like he was more concerned with trying to look good (Golden Boy Styel) rather than trying to take Joe out. Also... remember Diego's only losses were to Koscheck and John Fitch...two of the best welterweights in the world...and both fights were close decisions... Diego's no slouch..

Now that Joe Daddy (a shed26 fan favorite) has now lost to the top three 155'ers in the UFC...BJ Penn, Ken Flo and Diego... I see him becoming a "gate-keeper" of the weight division...meaning all up and comers need to get past him to be considered for a title shot...but it will be a while before he gets another shot at the top UFC 155'ers... I think you'll instead see him drop to 145 and head off to the WEC...

Ok lets look ahead to this weekend...

we've got WEC on Sunday night (3/1/09) available for free on Versus (channel 65...but check your local listings)...The 145 champ , Mike Brown vs. Leonard Garcia...Brown is the guy who knocked out Uriah Faber (the best 145er in the world)..and Garcia is one of the most entertaining fighters in the WEC...he NEVER has a boring fight...Brown on the other hand is a bit of a mystery...a wrestler by trade, he seems to have a nice stand-up game and pretty much bullied Uriah Faber...this should be a good fight...With Garcia swinging for the fences and Brown standing until things go wrong...If brown takes it to the mat, we can only hope he does it with bad intensions (Randy Cotoure style)...I would hate for Brown to win "by blanket"... stalling and clock watching from the top (Frank get your mind out of the gutter)

Again, we finally get to see Gray Maynard fight another wrestler that he can't push around the cage... Gray keeps piling up the victories, but no real memorable wins... kind of a staller when he get's in any trouble...Miller is a bad A$$ that can wrestle...it's go time Gray!!

Tamdan McCrory Vs. Ryan Madigan

McCrory is pretty entertaining...no idea who madigan is...this fight may be the night's only dudd

Tim Boetsch Vs. Jason Brilz

This may be tomoto-cannish actually...Vera needs a win and has not looked good since dropping to 205... The UFC is looking to make a big move into the Phillipines this year and really need to prop Vera up so he can headline...(We'l also see see Munos on that card)

I must put myself at the mercy of the Shed-26 Membership Committee. I confess. I missed Fight Night last week. I didn't check with the blog, and found myself invited to the Acton Jazz Cafe for a night of New Orleans Jazz and Blues with a group of 30 from Acton. I danced with women. I listened to great music. I worked the room. I threw back a few Iced Teas.

I am ashamed of my behaviour and lack of support for the Shed. I have let it down, and I am sorry for that. I hope the Membership Committee can forgive my slaggard behaviour and will let me remain a member.

Oh, yeah, I was invited for helping someone move, and I got a free meal out of it. I hope there is at least some redemption in that!

Sympathetic to Kevin's Plight!

I would like to say that it is unfair to prosecute Mr. Hart for his plight! It is not easy to end one's battle with 'roids! Take it from someone who has had to deal with them since my bout with poison ivy, and the resulting endless emotional and physical pain of trying to stop the insanity around them! No matter how I try I just can't rid myself of the returning burning and their influence on my serenity. Yes, they have even affected my performance in the Shed! I have spent long hours unable to sit still for more than a few soothing seconds! If you only knew the frustration and difficulty of holding back my RAGE at the world! But, thankfully, the Shed is the only place where the happiness and support of my fellow Shed mates far outweighs these curses, and provides me a respit and some peace in my life. So, don't judge poor Kevin Hart! He is fighting a gallant and valiant battle to hold back his own 'roid rage! Let's not condemn him! Don't Tuck it too him! Let's support him and soothe him with the cool, sometimes, icy relief that the Shed can provide on his Dark and Stormy nights! I'm with you Kevin! I'm with you all the way!

WOW, I was really enjoying myself along with my family down at Disney World until I received some disturbing news. One of our Shed-ites is being charged with using
Steriods, Shed-26 News is reporting that our own Kevin Hart has taken steriods, as we all know this is a violation of the Shed Bill of Rights and our Collective Party agreement for the occupancy for events to be held at the Shed 26 Entertainment and Sports Complex. Rumor has it that Hart is going out of state to try to avoid local Law Enforcement. We are awaitung a statement from Shed President Andrew Conquest concerning this very disturbing matter .

Kevin...I don't think we've ever met...but I like what you're binging to the table...nice assessment of the J-Lau / lil' heathen Stevens match-up tonight...

I think Stevens would have had a shot if he had a few months to train, but as he took the fight on such short notice (Hermes Franca bailed out due to injury) I don't think Stevens will have the gas to defend J-Lau's take downs for long....

Stevens has a puncher's chance, but I see him eating serious elbows from Lauzons ground and pound attack, and he'll probably give up his back and Joe will sink in his signature naked choke...

Good point about the flying knee...if you want to see a 155 pounder who would wail both of these dudes....check out this reel of hell boy hansen highlights.. Hansen fights like the guy in the movie in Snatch....walks into the ring sporting cut-off flannel shirt and a schlitz promotional hat...cracks the guy with a flying knee...then just walks away...doesn't even look back...

155-ers outside of the UFC that would destroy both these guys:

Shinya Aoki, Hellboy Hansen, Eddie Alvarez.... The first 2 fight in Dream in Japan and the Alvarez is locked up with Strikeforce (who just bought elite xc and will start showing free events on nbc and showtime)...so we probably won't get a chance to see these guys face off against BJ penn or Ken Flo any time in the near future...

A tough night for the lone BJ Penn fan in the Shed 26 on Saturday night. From the start, it looked bad for the prodigy, coming in at a robust 169 lbs and GSP with GSP hydrating back to 189 lbs. All the "BJ rededicating himself" talk looked to be mostly ticket sales hype, as the expression on BJ's face at the start of the fight looked much like yours truly after another one of Bri-boy's jambalaya gas explosions from one chair away. Looked like he just realized he had brought a knife to a gun fight.

Although BJ was dominated in all phases, it was nice to wake up to the GSP Grease-ing scandal...now we know why he was slipping out of BJ's rubber guard so easily early in the fight. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that a "dry" GSP (that doesn't sound right...one sec, let me see if dryGSP.com is available) would have instantly found himself trapped in a signature BJ Pen Omiplata, but the scandal does cut into the "Mr. Nice Guy from the north" rep a bit.

Most of the other fights went wrong for your friendly Shed 26 UFC Correspondent as well, with LNP (Lay N' Pray) the major theme of the night, if felt like Kieth was going to run up the Shed stairs wearing a tin foil suit at any minute....Vision (Con)Quest? Sorry that was bad...it's my first official correspondent blog so cut me some slack.


St Pierre will most like take on Thiago Alves mid year, while BJ Penn will move back down to lightweight to take on Shed 26 favorite Kenny Florian for the lightweight belt. Both great Shed 26 Fight Nights.

Definitely a Shed UFC night!! This is stacking up to be a great card...chock full of great fighters who come to fight...The headliner, while a great match up, is a little disappointing as I was looking forward to Rampage getting a shot at Rashad Evan's Title...but who doesn't like the Dean of Mean!!! (Jay P90 Conquest, that's who)...Rampage and Jardine are always great to watch and you know someone is going to wake up in the gentle hands of Mario Yamasaki..

Fight of the night will be Shane Carwin vs. Gariel Gonzaga...both monsters and two of the only guys in the world with the ability to knock out Brock Lestner with one Canned Ham Punch. Also that night we'll see three other entertaining fighters in complete tomato-can match up's: Matt Hamill, Tim Boetsch and Brandon Vera should all destroy their opponents in convincing fashion..

The New England Patriots hired former Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese as senior football advisor. The Patriots also announced director of player personnel Nick Caserio will take over the daily operations of the personnel department.


Bill Belichick is disappointed about missing the playoffs but feels his team can use the rest.
The moves became necessary when Scott Pioli left the team to become the general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs. Pioli had been the vice president of player personnel and worked closely with New England coach Bill Belichick.

Reese has been involved with the NFL for more than 30 years, including 17 seasons in player personnel and 15 seasons as an assistant coach. His most recent NFL job was as the executive vice president/general manager of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans from 1994-2006.

Reese has been an ESPN NFL analyst for the past two seasons.

"We consider ourselves fortunate to have the opportunity to add someone with Floyd Reese's NFL experience and expertise to our staff," Patriots chairman and CEO Robert Kraft said in a release. "Floyd will be a tremendous asset serving Coach Belichick in an advisory role."

In his 13 seasons as the general manager, Reese's Titans teams won 111 games. Sixteen of the 22 starters on this year's final 2008 Titans roster were originally acquired while Reese was general manager, including nine of 11 starters on defense. Six of his acquisitions are heading to the Pro Bowl -- QB Kerry Collins, CB Cortland Finnegan, DT Albert Haynesworth, S Chris Hope, C Kevin Mawae and T Michael Roos.

"Floyd and I go back a long way, practically to the beginning for both of us," Belichick said in a release. "He has handled as much as one person can possibly handle in this league."

According to a breaking story out of Denver, Josh Mc Daniels has been named the new head coach of the Denver Bronco's, Press Conference to take place on Monday.

The St Louis Cardinals ( Arizona ) host the Philadelphia Eagles for the right to represnt the NFC in the Superbowl. Didn't the Patriots beat the Carinals by a zillion in week 16. The Eagles defeated the Cardinals earlier this year in Philadelphia 48-20 . The Card's are a different team when paying at home, and also they did play some pretty good d against the run against Carolina. Gators to limit Sooner Scoring machine 34-31

In order to stop a high scoring team like the Sooners you'll need a couple FIRM weapons. The Sooners do have a pair of threats, but it's the overall threat that the Gators pose that will balance out amd make the difference. I believe the the average ranked defense that Oaklahoma has played against is ranked 92nd out of 151. Florida has scored and played against a defense ranked with 16 or less average. Anyway, regardless, Florida's ball control offense, and experience at the QB position in the big games will make the difference.

Some Pats defenders may have made their last stands

By the end of the season, the New England Patriots’ defense did not at all resemble the defense that took the field for the season opener. Injuries to a number of players, primarily at linebacker and in the secondary, meant that old hands Junior Seau and Rosevelt Colvin were brought back for the final month of the season.

And by the time training camp begins, the unit that was on the field last Sunday in Buffalo may not be much like the one that assembles in the late July heat.

Here’s a look at players on defense who may have played their last game with New England.

James Sanders: A fourth-round draft pick in 2005 whose rookie contract will expire on Feb. 26, Sanders has developed into a solid safety for New England. He handled much of the backfield communication once Rodney Harrison was injured and finished the season with 66 tackles (44 solo), one interception and three passes defensed.

Rodney Harrison: The 15-year veteran tore his quadriceps on Oct. 20 against Denver and was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Despite his age, the 36-year old was effective on the field — he had 45 tackles, one interception and a forced fumble in five-plus games — and off, as Sanders and Brandon Meriweather frequently cite him as a dedicated mentor. Harrison could feel he has unfinished business and New England would likely welcome him back.

Mike Wright: The defensive lineman has become a key reserve for the Pats, and played well late in the season as his snaps increased. Wright enters free agency for the first time, having signed a one-year, restricted-free-agent-deal with New England last offseason.

Lewis Sanders: Signed for short money as a free agent last year, Sanders was called upon a great deal toward the end of the season, lining up at cornerback and safety when James Sanders missed time with an abdominal injury.

Deltha O’Neal: Despite the injuries in the secondary, O’Neal was relegated to a reserve role by the end of the season, supplanted as a starter by rookie Jonathan Wilhite. A two-time Pro Bowler, O’Neal was released by the Bengals at the end of training camp and it seemed like he was going to be counted on to line up opposite Ellis Hobbs, though it didn’t work out.

Pierre Woods: Woods was pressed into starting duty with Adalius Thomas’ injury, and seemed to be just finding his groove when he suffered his own season-ending injury — a broken jaw. The third-year player is a restricted free agent and figures to stick around.

Tank Williams: Williams became something of a forgotten man after suffering what’s believed to be a torn ACL in his right knee during the preseason. Before that, he was learning the hybrid safety/linebacker role Harrison has often played. Williams was signed to a one-year deal before the season. His rehab is progressing well, and at 28, he could be a candidate to return.

Chris Hanson: The punter had an up-and-down season, but certainly finished the season on a high note with his performance in the howling winds at Buffalo, which earned him AFC special teams player of the week honors. New England also has punter Tom Malone, who finished the season on practice squad.

While the above players are all free agents and New England will need to make a decision on each, no fewer than eight defensive players will enter the final year of their current contract in 2009. Those players include Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Jarvis Green, Ellis Hobbs, Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi.

Signing Seymour and Wilfork to contract extensions is likely a top priority, as is keeping the defensive line intact. Ty Warren signed an extension last year that has him locked up until 2013
